تحكى الرواية عن معاناة الأطفال فى عام 1838 فى قرية سوجنونو القريبة من وادى فيزاسكا فى سويسرا، ومدينة ميلانو فى إيطاليا، هؤلاء الأطفال يضطرون للعمل على تنظيف المداخن بمدينة ميلانو الإيطالية، والتى تنهى بعضهم بالموت بأمراض يسببها رماد الدخان والعمل القاسى وقسوة العيش
يضطر جوليان للذهاب إلى ميلانو كى يعمل فى تنظيف المداخن، من أجل أن يساهم فى إعالة أسرته و علاج أمه المريضة، ويعيش جوليان هناك فى ظروف غير إنسانية، و يتعرض للاضطهاد والجوع والمرض، ويموت بعض زملائه جراء المرض
